Frequently Asked Questions

Please take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions below, to find out more about my therapy sessions and how the process works.

Each session is usually between 45-60 minutes long. What happens during them will depend on what has been agreed with the young person as to what they would like to focus on and what they would like help with. The sessions can take different formats depending on the age and preferences of the child, I will introduce some different tools and strategies depending on what we are focusing on during the session.

Sometimes it is helpful if the parent is present the first time, as this is an information gathering and explanation session. However, it is the young person’s choice, and often they do choose to come in on their own. I will feed back to you after the initial session with my assessment and suggested support so that you can discuss this with them.

The majority of my sessions are held face to face at my log cabin in Marlow. I do, however offer online sessions to young people who logistically cannot get to me for sessions or do not live in the local area.

When you get in contact with me and we agree that my support may be helpful, I’ll send you the link to book an initial session. This allows us all to meet and gives your child/teen the choice of whether they would like to continue to be supported by me. Often at this point I can assess the current situation and how many sessions are likely to be needed.

We usually start with 4 weekly sessions and then I review the support with yourself and your young person at this point. Sometimes 6-8 is enough to move on from the issue or it may be that longer term support is required if the situation is more complex.

I will discuss this with you and ensure that we have a plan in place that everyone is in agreement with, which sometimes can mean moving to fortnightly or even monthly sessions.

The focus of my work is with children and teens of secondary school age, so from 11 years upwards.

I do my best to accommodate as many children outside of school hours. I fully appreciate as a parent myself, that taking children out of school is not preferred. However, sometimes this means there will be more of a wait for my support and very often I find that schools are happy for a regular, planned session to occur during the school day as long as it does not clash with important subjects.

My sessions are £90 per hour, booked and paid for online. Up to 4 sessions can be booked in advance at any one time..

It can be really hard for young people, firstly to admit that they need some support, and then to agree to come. You may find that they say yes and then change their mind at the last minute. This is the reason I offer my initial session, so that they are under no pressure to continue the support if they choose not to, but in that session will gain an understanding of their current situation and why they may be feeling the way they do.

As a parent, we want our children to be helped and supported, and as far as possible, I will work with you to try and help them feel comfortable about speaking to me. I am flexible in my approach and as well as face to face and online, can also do phone calls if they feel more comfortable with this, or video calls with the camera off.

However, if your child is adamant they do not want to see me and refuses to come, it is unlikely the support will be beneficial, and it is possible that I am not the right person for them. If this is the case, I will help and guide you as far as I can to help you to find alternative support.

Working alongside parents as they learn to navigate the teenage years and all the uncertainty it can bring is a fast expanding area of my work. Often parents are carrying a lot of responsibility for organising and sorting multiples areas of their children’s lives and at times this can feel incredibly overwhelming.  Even if your young person is receiving support, challenges often remain at home and I find when I mentor and guide the parent on their own journey, things do improve within the family unit itself. You are welcome to book a call for yourself to discuss how I may be able to support you too.

If you cannot find the answer to your question above, or would like to discuss your needs in more detail, please get in touch.
