Parenting Through September Transitions
September always feels like a turning point. We see the signs everywhere: new school uniforms, fresh pencil cases, trousers that suddenly seem two inches too short. These rituals mark a symbolic transition for our children, whether they’re stepping into secondary school, sixth form, college, or university.
But what often goes unspoken is the emotional journey we go on as parents alongside these milestones, and the challenges of parenting teens through change.
The Hidden Side of Change
It’s not just the first day at school that stirs something in us. Every time our children step into a new stage of life, they also take a step further into their independence, which can feel like a step away from us.
This past year, I experienced this in a very real way when my eldest left home for university. I had prepared myself for it to be difficult, but nothing could have readied me for the amount of self-reflection and inner work it would require. I knew I had to support him in making this leap freely, without the weight of my own emotions holding him back.
Not Passing on Our Own Shackles
My determination came from my own lived experience. I know what it feels like to carry the heavy burden of emotional enmeshment, and I was clear that my son would not have to shoulder that same load. He deserved to begin this next chapter with only his own needs and dreams guiding him.
As parents, we often carry unspoken grief and loss when our children move into new stages of their lives. These feelings are real and valid, yet so rarely acknowledged. Finding spaces where we can process these emotions is at the heart of parenting teens through change, allowing us to show up in the best way for our children, while also embracing the possibilities opening up for ourselves.
Beyond the Highlight Reel
Right now, my social media feed is full of bright exam result celebrations and sunny holiday snapshots. Lovely as these moments are, they don’t tell the full story. Behind every smiling post, there are families navigating exhaustion, worry, and sometimes heartbreak.
For parents already finding family life tough, it can feel isolating when others appear to be sailing smoothly through. Without safe spaces to speak honestly, we’re left holding our fears and uncertainties in silence.
A Space to Be Supported
Looking back on my own journey, the support that made the biggest difference came from those who had walked this path before me. They could see my raw grief for what it was, without judgement. That compassion was invaluable, and it’s what I want to offer to you.
This September, I’ve created a free two-week Telegram space for parents. Each weekday, I’ll share a short audio reflection, nothing complicated, simply words to remind you that you’re not alone.
Telegram may be new to you, but it’s just a safe place to listen, share if you wish, and feel held by someone who not only works with parents of teens, but is living this journey herself.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Wherever you are in your parenting journey, whether it’s the first day of school or the bittersweet moment of waving a teen off to university, please know this: parenting teens through change doesn’t have to be a lonely path.
