The Quiet Truth About Parenting Sensitive Teens

There’s no shortage of advice out there on parenting sensitive teens—how to talk to them, how to connect, how to avoid getting it “wrong.”
My feed is full of it. Maybe yours is too.

But here’s what I’ve found, both as a mentor and a mother: when it comes to parenting sensitive teens, what they truly need from us isn’t perfection—it’s presence.

And presence begins in the quiet, everyday moments we so often overlook.

The Power of Noticing

I call them the extraordinary ordinary moments.

They’re the quiet, often overlooked moments that build the kind of connection we long for with our teens.

Not the family holidays or days out which often show up on the well known social media ‘highlight reel’

But the sound of siblings laughing in the next room.
The football playing in the background—for the millionth time.
The messy kitchen, because they’ve learned how to cook something on their own.

These moments calm my nervous system. They bring me back to centre.

But they’re easy to miss when we’re rushing, worrying, or trying hard to “get it right.”

Letting Go, Noticing the Shift when Parenting Sensitive Teens

On Good Friday, the doorbell rang. The dog barked, as usual, and I went to the door expecting a parcel.

Instead, there stood my oldest son.

Home from uni. Unannounced. Just back from rowing camp the night before.

That moment—his decision to come home, just because he wanted to—meant the world.

It told me that all the letting go I’d been consciously working through, showed up in that moment:

Letting him find his own rhythm.
Not constantly checking in.
Trusting that our connection would still be there.

And it was.

He stood on that doorstep, and I saw clearly how deep connection is built—not through control, but through space, trust, and consistency.

It’s a Practice

Noticing takes intention.

It’s a shift from fixing to witnessing.
From striving to simply being with.

It’s not always easy. Holding ourselves steady while raising sensitive, emotionally intense teens takes strength, softness, and community.

And that’s why I created something new.
