When we think about personal growth and emotional well-being, we often focus on the physical and emotional aspects of our experiences. We explore how we feel, how we respond to challenges, and how we process past experiences. But there’s another layer that is often overlooked—energetics.
Energetics is the missing piece in understanding how we move through life, respond to stress, and navigate our emotions. This concept has been fundamental in my work and personal life, including how I parent my own teens, allowing me to connect the dots between emotions, behaviours, and deeply rooted patterns. It’s transformed the way I approach challenging situations with my own children, recognising what I need to identify and move through without getting stuck in what I often call ‘analysis paralysis’.
The way I have learnt to understand, and express it is through exploring the Emotional Development Cycles—a framework that explains how our earliest experiences shape us in ways we may not even realise.
What Are Emotional Development Cycles?
Emotional Development Cycles are based on the understanding that our foundational programming happens in the first seven years of life. From the moment we are conceived, through to early childhood, we absorb patterns, emotions, and beliefs from the world around us. These experiences become the blueprint for how we navigate life.
What makes this framework fascinating is that these early experiences don’t just stay in the past—they repeat in cycles every seven years. This means that challenges, emotions, or patterns experienced in the first year of life can resurface around ages seven, 14, 21, 28, and beyond. When we look at our struggles, our fears, or the emotional patterns that seem to repeat, we can trace them back to these earlier cycles. What is important to recognise here though, is that they will not show up in the same way, so the connections are not always made as sometimes what we experience can be very subtle.
How These Cycles Influence Us Over Time
Unrecognised, and unresolved, each seven-year phase builds upon the previous one, influencing how we develop relationships, respond to stress, and interact with the world. For example, an experience of instability or lack of security in early childhood may show up later in life as anxiety, difficulty trusting others, or an ongoing need for control.
By recognizing these cycles, we gain clarity on why certain emotional themes keep resurfacing or what we believe about ourselves in different parts of our life, in work, parenting, or in other relationships, including friendships. In exploring the cycles, and what is showing up, Instead of feeling stuck or overwhelmed by repeating challenges, we can begin to see them as opportunities for healing and transformation.
The Role of Energetics in Breaking Cycles
Energetics takes this understanding, and the ability to resolve these repeating patterns even deeper. Every experience we have carries an energetic imprint. If we don’t consciously process or release these energies, they stay stored in our system, subtly influencing our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
By working with energy, we can shift these imprints, allowing for deeper healing and transformation. This might involve practices like energy work, meditation or inner child healing. The starting point on this journey is to identify and understand the cycles, which leads to uncovering the programming which will have been present throughout your life. The next step from identifying this root is to clear old patterns so that we respond to life from a place of empowerment, understanding ourselves and why we respond the way we do, rather than unconscious reaction activated by experiences not from the present moment.
Applying This Knowledge to Your Life
Understanding Emotional Development Cycles and energetics gives us a new perspective on personal growth. Instead of viewing challenges as random or unchangeable, we can begin to recognise the deeper patterns at play.
By integrating awareness, reflection, and energy work, we can:
- Identify where old emotional wounds are still influencing our present.
- Release stored energetic imprints that no longer serve us.
- Become aware of our reactions and behaviours, and rather than blame ourselves or even others for them, come from a place of understanding and an intention to move through them, becoming a ‘cycle breaker’.
When we embrace this approach, we open the door to real transformation—not just at the surface level, but at the core of who we are. By honoring our energetic and emotional development, we create the space for deep healing, growth, and lasting change.
